Curb bits are leverage bits that are generally used when riding with one hand.  They work on the bars of the mouth, under the chin, and over the poll.  Curb bits come with many different shank lengths.  The longer the shank is on the bit, the more severe the pressure will be when the reins are pulled.  At the same time, the horse is also rewarded quicker when the pressure from the reins is released.  A curb bit with a shorter shank will not be as severe.  However, it also will not reward the horse as quickly.  The greater the curve of the shank, the more delayed the signal time is to the horse, which makes curbs a popular choice with novice riders riding trained horses.  Curb bits have a solid ported mouthpiece that relieves the horse's tongue pressure.
