Snaffle bits with shanks - These bits work on the bars of the mouth, the corners of the mouth and the tongue. The longer the bit's shank, the more severe the pressure will be when the bit is pulled. It will also be quicker to reward the horse when the pressure from the reins is released. A bit with a shorter shank will not be as severe, but it also will not reward the horse as quickly.
Tom Thumb Snaffle Bits - These bits are often used to help make the transition from a ring snaffle to a longer shanked snaffle or to a curb bit. They work on the bars, poll and corners of the mouth. This bit style is available with grazing shanks or with straight shanks.
Three-Piece Snaffle Bits - These bits are broken in two places and work on the corners of the mouth, the poll and the tongue. The shanks on these bits may differ in length, giving the rider more or less leverage.
Full Cheek Snaffle Bits - These snaffles provide a traditional hunter look and feature full cheeks that help prevent the bit from pulling through the mouth. They work on the bars of the mouth, the corners of the mouth and the tongue. They also can work on the poll when bit loops are used with a bridle.
